Axe head problems

I have a 3/4 axe I use in Idyllwild for all my easy chopping and wood prep. I also have a sledge-wedge for splitting big stuff. The 3/4 axe has been with me for 37 years or more. It is a good axe and has never given me any talk-back---until this weekend. The head was about to fall off. After all these years? so I gave it the time tested fix---soak it in water to swell up the wood. I could have driven in wedges to hold it in place---but I want to try this out. I have read about it and (being a woodworker by trade) understand that water will swell up the Hickory handle to trap the head on the axe. Now I am giving it a try.

Oh, yeah, Hickory is what we Americans call wild pecan.

So far, but it took 40 years to fall off the first time, so I may not know for a while.

What happens when it dries out? I imagine it will fall off again.

Actually, the swelling is semi-permanent. It does shrink when it dries, but maybe only 50% of the size before it swelled.
