Catalina on a boat

Catalina is a great resource for SoCal boating. Dropping anchor at Whites or Moonstone or Emerald is very special this time of year. You don't have to anchor. If you prefer to be on a mooring can, those are available on a first come basis for about $25 a night for a thirty foot boat. The Salad Bowl (a trash collection barge) comes by once or twice a weekend to take your refuse at $3 a bag.

I like to anchor in close to the beach at Whites if the wind is from the right direction and the surge is not too strong. We put out both a bow and stern anchor in that situation.

My sail boat, the Seaweed, comfortably can take three or four. We typically leave early in the morning from Newport and motor out off Huntington Beach heading for the mid-channel oil islands until the wind picks up, then crack off and head for Long Point and Whites.

During the stay at the island, I always plan a hike up the hillsides ashore. Catalina has a unique and special landscape with interesting plants and animals---bison are real cool when you encounter them in the wild.
