Looking for a good campground

Hello everyone,

I'll be camping w/ two families w/ kids ages 2-5 years. We will be going the second week in Sept. for 3 days. Would like to be by some water (swimming) and some trail heads. We will be using a tent and a truck camper. One family lives in San Diego (me) and the other in Hermosa Beach. It's been awhile since I've been camping, but I would like to get back into it, especially now that I have to younger kids.

Thanks,
Lilbear

How far do you want to go? My kids love San Simeon State Park and Big Sur but it's a drive from San Diego.

I would suggest Hurkey Creek Riverside County Park on hwy 74 in Garner Valley. There are nice views of the mountains, flush toilets in a true camping in the pines situation. Lake Hemet is right across the highway. This is the San Jacinto Mountains so there are high peaks with no bears, lots of trails, fishing but no swimming.

Or, if you must swim, I would suggest Stone Creek or any of the other Forest service campgrounds over near Stone Creek (a State Park campground). These sites all have pit toilets which are the standard campground facility. These campgrounds are at the 6,000 level in the pine forest. They are between Idyllwild and Banning on Hwy. 243. A few miles down the road toward Banning from the campgrounds is a day use park called Lake Fulmore. It does not have a lifeguard, but I do see people swimming there on a regular basis.

If you need more specifics let me know.

Yes Big Sur would be awesome, but a bit far for us on this trip. I'm thinking maybe 3-4 hours out of San Diego.

The San Jacinto Mountains are about 2.5 hrs from both Hermosa Beach and San Diego. Besides Hurkey Creek in Garner Valley, and the forest service parks (Fern Basin, Azalea Trails, Dark Canyon, Marion Mountain) and state park (Stone Creek) in Pine Cove, there are two campgrounds in the town of Idyllwild---County Park and the San Jacinto State Park.

If you want a more rustic site, Black Mountain Rd. is a dirt road off Hwy. 243 on the way from Idyllwild to Banning that climbs up to the top of Fuller Ridge. Any car can drive it. There is a forest service campground called Boulder Basin at the top and five yellow post sites along the length of Fuller Ridge.

Temperatures at night in the mountains can be quite cool in September, so be prepared.
