August camping in southern Cal

August is a hot month to camp in southern California. I live in Costa Mesa and I don't like bears, so that leaves me with one mountain range---the San Jacintos. The Forest service has taken it upon itself to cut down most of the vegetation around all the roads near Idyllwild so that leaves only one good place---and it is the best place---Fuller Ridge.

Take 243 out of Banning and drive up to the top of the mountain. When you reach the turn-off for Black Mountain Road---take it. This is a dirt road that may need a higher clearance vehicle, but I did once see a Prius up on top so don't give up. Follow the road up to the top of the ridge and stay to the right at the turn-off for Boulder Basin, or if you want a lot of company, camp at Bouldr Basin. They have pit toilets but no water. Reservations are accepted.

I camp at the yellow post sites and that requires a adventure Pass and a fire permit which the ranger can issue at the site. Get there early as there are only five yellow post sites. All excellent. There is also a group camp but that requires reservations and a fee.

Elevation about 7,000 feet. No bears. Bring your own water. Here are my photo's from three weeks ago.

The spring is about two hundred yards east of camp around the side of the hill. The dog is Gunner, my camping buddy. The butterfly is a tiger swallowtail sitting on an azalea. The Bird is a violet-green swallow and that is the nest. It was in an old snag right north of my campsite. In the first picture before, the mountain in the background is Grayback or San Gorgonio Peak. Notice the shade flies above the tent? Very important if you want to stay cool

For people who like to hike, at yellow post site 6 the Fuller Ridge Trail to San Jacinto Peak starts. Even if one doesn't hike all the way to the top, there are great views off to the north from the trail.

The same trail is also part of the Pacific Crest trail and yellow post 6 is where many of the through hikers stop and camp in May.

If you plan on camping somewhere without a yellow post, do not make a fire. The ticket is $200 and the ranger is very serious about finding and stopping illegal fires.
