Fuller Ridge

I camped up on Fuller ridge in the San Jacintos this weekend. It was cool in the day and cold at night. The wind blew the whole time, but because of the pines, it was more of a whispering thing than any hard breeze through the site.

The wet winter showed everywhere. Springs flowed that I had never seen before and streams were full. Because of the elevation, 7,000', the wild flowers are just getting started.

I would recommend Fuller Ridge and Black Mountain to anyone, especially if you like bouldering. I see many people carrying around their crash pads and there are a lot of large granite boulders. Several good trails either start on the ridge or cross over the ridge including the Pacific Crest which runs right through my favorite campsite, #6.

To get to Fuller ridge, take Hwy 243 from Banning. Once you pass Lake Fulmor, the turn-off is a mile or so up on the left. From there it is about 30 minutes up a dirt road that any car can make. I took my Prius up there a few years ago. At the top, one road goes to the left to Boulder Basin Campground and the other road to the right and the yellow post sites.

No bears live in the San Jacinto Mountains or any of the ranges south. So watch for rattlesnakes, but don't sweat the bears.
