Hey everyone, newbie here (both to the forum and camping!). I was wondering if anyone can refer me to a good place to to go camping that's not a camp ground. My friends and I went to Joshua Tree a few months back, but there were way too many people around. Thanks!

What are you looking for? Water, forest, hiking trail, etc.

Last summer I went back packing in the Hetch Hetchy portion of Yosemite. There was hardley anyone. It was great.

I don't know if you're still up for camping or not. But Santa Barbara beaches are great for camping, and they're not exactly "camp grounds."

Looking to go backpacking in a few weeks with a friend. I saw a few places near Santa Barbara on localhikes.com. Any suggestions at Santa Barbara beaches?

go to www.santabarbara.com (http://www.santabarbara.com) It's got everything you need to know for camping on the beaches.

Any favorite spot(s) in SB? For some reason, I can't sleep with sound of the ocean waves. I camped at San Simeon almost yearly, and always have trouble sleeping because of the sound of the waves. :(

Yes, Lake Cachuma is amazing. Go to the link I posted above and click on "Camping" under "Activities". You'll see Lake Cachuma on the list, along with info and directions on how to get there.

I've been there twice already, and since my Big Bear plans fell apart, I'm going again this spring break 03/27-03/29.
