If there is any chance of rain---and it often rains when you were not planning on it---make sure you have plenty of trash bags. Never be without them.

Twice this year, I have had to pack up camp in the rain. Here is how to do it. First off, I use shade and rain flies---tarps on poles--- so that most of my stuff stays under cover. Everything that is dry gets packed in its normal way. I have zippered duffles or stuff sacks for almost all my gear. Working under the tarps, I get it all ready. If possible back the truck up to the tarp cover so that you can load without everything getting wet.

Once all the dry stuff is packed and you are down to just the tent, tarps and poles, and maybe a few other wet things, get out the trash bags. Fold up wet stuff with the wet or muddy surfaces in, facing each other. Then start filling the trash bags and tying them off. Load them into the truck and when you get home, you will need to deal with the stuff, but at least the wet, muddy items are not contaminating the whole load.
