I was back camping in Clark Valley this past weekend. I had a chance to sort out all the gear from the Christmas break when we had camped in this exact same spot. There were a few items still wet from when we left in a rain storm. I also found a tent stake we had forgotten.
The temps were perfect---75 and sunny with no wind in the day and 45 at night. Several groups of coyotes went off every half hour all night long. They were not close---maybe a quarter mile at the closest, but loud and I woke up almost every time. Ted and Gunner were up the first few times and then seemed to ignore the howling and chirps from then on.
Sunday when I was packing the truck we had a real close call. Ted and Gunner were sacked out next to the pick-up while I packed. Next thing, Ted starts barking. I drop the Dutch oven and look to see what the deal is and a coyote is six feet from Ted. He turns to split and Ted goes after him. "NO! TED, GET BACK HERE RIGHT NOW!" By the time I had run after both Ted and Gunner and the coyote and got Ted halted and back to the truck, both Ted and Gunner had hit a cactus. Gunner had a Needle Cholla clump in his nose, armpit, other armpit, and two feet. Ted had a clump in his back foot.
Coyote chased off, cactus pulled, we were packed and left Clark Valley. From there we got gas and drove to Blair Valley and the Marshall South homestead. I have the movie---"Ghost Mountain Experiment." It is a great movie and a nice little 1 mile hike to the top of Ghost Mountain to actually visit the site where Marshall South and his family lived for a few years. He was the first "Hippie" in 1932.
Here are the photo's.
