We went to Lake Shasta before going to the Redwoods in June. We rented a houseboat for 4 days and visited the various camping and hiking spots on the lake. There's a crystal cave to explore, but our pics didn't turn out. It's an artificial lake where they flooded a river valley, so there are some lost mining towns at the bottom. We also purchased fishing licenses but didn't catch anything big enough to eat.

...and here's the route we took to the Redwoods. It was AFH for hours through the mountains, except very green. I really wished I was on my bike instead of the PT Cruiser rental I was stuck with.

How much was the rental for a houseboat for 1 day? That sounds pretty cool to rent a boat and just cruise around, sure beats owning and maintaining one.

It wasn't cheap... we had the most expensive rental boat in the fleet- it had about 7 bedrooms with LCD TVs, full kitchen, dining area... it cost about $200 each for 4 nights. There were 15 people on the boat. Because of the slow speed of the boat and the size of the lake, you really need a few days to make it worthwhile.

That's a big boat! I was hunting for cheap land in that area, but none fit my poor budget. The plan was to buy a small piece of land so I can just vacation once in a while and get away. It's much more "greener" compare to So Cal, which is practically a big desert.

Yes it's definitely more green, but the ground is still hard and dusty. Anywhere off the trail was full of prickly plants. Temps were around 100 the entire time we were there, compared to upper 60s in the Redwoods. Due to the acid in the Redwood trees, it's mostly just soft ferns on the ground, so you can wander in any direction to find Ewoks.

Well $200 for 4 night is real economical. I thgought it wouldnt be less than $100 per night. I think i would go there this winter for my vacations. The photographs came out real neat and added to my decision of visiting Lake Shasta.
