View Full Version : Angeles National Forest trails
Anyone have a GOOD map of where trails begin in ANF? I want do start doing some hiking up there on days I don't ride.
I found where to get the passes for parking (http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/sanbernardino/ap/pass-options.shtml), but haven't found a good trailhead map yet.
I want to try out this hike (http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/angeles/recreation/hike-islipsad2littlejimmy-mtislip.shtml)but it would be nice to have a map of exactly where it starts.

Trailhead
From the 210 freeway in La Canada, take the Angeles Crest Highway (2) and drive 39.5 miles to a turnout on the right, 1.5 miles past the 2 tunnels. There is a forest service road with a yellow gate about 50 foot past the turnout. Head up this dirt road for to the junction with the trail to Little Jimmy Camp.
Description
The views to the south from the summit of Mt Islip are nothing short of stunning. You can see Crystal Lake, the front range of the San Gabriels, as well as the San Gabriel river canyon. I had my lunch looking at this vista and felt like I was in heaven. The hike starts out heading up a forest service road for a half mile, then you head left at the signed trailhead to Little Jimmy Camp, one mile ahead. I really like the gently rolling, pine shaded trail into Little Jimmy Camp. The less ambitious in your group can relax in the camp (it has rest rooms and a spring a 1/4 mile away), while the balance of your group heads up to the summit.
The summit trail is at the back of Little Jimmy camp (walk past both rest rooms). The summit trail takes you up some switch backs to a ridgeline. There is a junction with another trail at the ridgeline that comes up from Crystal Lake, but you should stay on the ridgeline trail up to the summit.

A friend of mine showed me a great trail last year. It's less than a mile after the AFH/ACH split, on ACH. The trail is well made and takes you by a little waterfall at the beginning and follows a stream. I'll try to get more specifics.
Mt. Islip also makes a good backpacking warm-up trip. There is parking at the trailhead where old Hwy 39 hits the Angeles Crest Hwy. Then the trail goes a few miles back southeast to Little Jimmy campground. It may be too late in the year to do it now, but there isn't any snow yet and the elevation is not too high. Be prepared for bears. As Vtec has said, the hike can also be done as a day hike.

the crest just opened last week. there is a sign stating that the trails are not yet open so i doubt you would be able to hike it. It sounds like the trail starts close to mt waterman and they have a base layer of snow, so the hike would be a cold one.
i hope it all opens in spring. I am newer to hiking and would like to explore the Crest.. there is a nice hike up Santa Anita Canyon.. 3 miles in there is a campground and another few miles another campground... i want to say it is Chantry Flats???
