I camped up in the San Jacinto Mountains this last weekend at Yellow Post 6. But that isn't new, I have been up at #6 about 4 times already this summer. It is where I go. The fires were a little unnerving, especially the Cottonwood fire down on 74 at the old turkey ranch. Basically that fire was at the bottom of the North Fork (of the San Jacinto ) drainage. Campsite #6 is at the top of the drainage. Fortunately, the wind blew the right way and the firefighters got a hold of the fire early.

I was kind of glad I was camping. I had my pickup and the thing was empty because all the gear was set up in my campsite, so if the fire threatened Idyllwild, I could leave the gear and drive down and get stuff from the cabin.

Anyway, none of that happened. I made my enchiladas for dinner and had a good time. The air cleared up by Saturday morning and, at 7500', the temperature never got into the ninties. I sat around and read Encounters With The Archdruid by John McPhee. This is an excellent book about conservation and one of the great American conservationists--David Brower.

So camp kitchens---mine is contained in three plastic crates and I use an Igloo cooler. The cooler has two water containers that you freeze for ice. They work great. When I come home from a trip they go right back into the freezer and then when I am packing to leave again, they go into the cooler. There is no melted water in the bottom of the cooler---very neat and easy, and clean.

The crates are broken down into 1.) cooking pots and utensils, 2.) Food stuff, cans, spices, pasta, oil, vinegar, etc., and 3.) paper goods, foil, bags, table cloths, clothespins, plastic utensils, paper towels.

The system works good for me and I try and remember to replace what I use up.
